Summary

When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader。 Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules。 But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger。

At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements。 When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought。 As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions。

Mary E。 Pearson's Dance of Thieves is a new YA novel in the New York Times bestselling Remnant Chronicles universe, in which a reformed thief and the young leader of an outlaw dynasty lock wits in a battle that may cost them their lives—and their hearts。

when the two main characters kissed within 100 pages despite this being marketed as an enemies to lovers story, i said nope。 also, i didn’t like the world building, plot, or side characters。 everything felt so flat。 dnf。

I was so hyped for this book based on how much I enjoyed "the kiss of deception"。 But I am SO disappointed。 Minor spoilers below:The characters are just kinda。。。 dumb? It’s early established that Kazi is in Jase’s territory to investigate treaty violations。 And although they do strike up some kind of deal to drop the charges, no part of me actually believes Jase would be dumb enough to believe that Kazi would simply abandon her queen’s assignment to just hang out and hook up for a solid 500 page I was so hyped for this book based on how much I enjoyed "the kiss of deception"。 But I am SO disappointed。 Minor spoilers below:The characters are just kinda。。。 dumb? As a result, the stakes felt so low that it completely strips the plot of suspense。 Additionaly, all conflict is solved by the following format: "I didn`t know / everything is a misunderstanding。 Let`s make out now before we´ll repeat this exact same conflict again in 50 pages。" 。。。more

for my friends~ dance of thieves: 4/5 ~this was a good book, and really enjoyable most of the time。 jase and kazi make an adorable couple and being able to see the story from both of their perspectives was great。 omg basically the story shifts between kazi’s pov and jase’s pov, which added to it imo。 it might’ve made some stuff more annoying at times, but overall it was a positive。 i loved seeing jase’s bond with his family and how much he loved them, and getting to see kazi witness that and que for my friends~ dance of thieves: 4/5 ~this was a good book, and really enjoyable most of the time。 jase and kazi make an adorable couple and being able to see the story from both of their perspectives was great。 omg basically the story shifts between kazi’s pov and jase’s pov, which added to it imo。 it might’ve made some stuff more annoying at times, but overall it was a positive。 i loved seeing jase’s bond with his family and how much he loved them, and getting to see kazi witness that and question her opinion of him was great。 honestly the family scenes were hands down the best scenes。 the kazi and jase scenes are tied for best actually, those two are just too cute。 the book has a very satisfying ending and im really looking forward to the next book (it’s only a duology tho)。 just jase and his family’s dynamic was such a highlight for me, and seeing what ends they’d go to protect each other was adorable。 seeing kazi and jase deal with being on opposing sends but still having such strong feelings was great too, i think the author did that really well。 the only reason i couldn’t give it 5 stars is cause it didnt have that same enjoyment factor。 maybe it’s because im coming off such a high with six of crows and crooked kingdom but it never felt like a “omg this book is so good im in love” book so i cant really give it 5 stars。 don’t get me wrong, the writing was amazing and the world building was too。 jase, kazi and other characters also got annoying at times which didn’t help the rating but i think it’s nothing compared to how well developed they were overall。 no seriosuly, seeing their growth and how they developed and looked at other perspectives was nice。 especially with the dual povs, it was a nice contrast between them almost。 i also like how even tho they did grow as people, they didn’t completely change or do a complete 180 for the other person。 i find it really annoying when a character just completely changes who they are with no explanation and this book had none of that。 maybe i’ll reread this book later on, when i havent just read six of crows and change it to a 5/5 cause there’s a lot of good with this book。 it just didn’t have that x factor for me so for now it’s a 4/5 (like a 4。5 tho)。 looking forward to book 2 (vow of thieves) tho!! 。。。more

OH MY GOODNESS。 We have an addition to the book boyfriend list。 Jase Ballenger。 Jase and Kazi are such a good couple。 this book had everything。 Hate to love, stuck together, betrayals, awesome friendships。 Jase's family was so close knit, I loved them。 Highly recommend picking this book up! But I really recommend reading the Remnant Chronicles first。 There are a lot of characters present from that series since this is a companion series that takes place a few years later。 It's a lot less confusi OH MY GOODNESS。 We have an addition to the book boyfriend list。 Jase Ballenger。 Jase and Kazi are such a good couple。 this book had everything。 Hate to love, stuck together, betrayals, awesome friendships。 Jase's family was so close knit, I loved them。 Highly recommend picking this book up! Amazing book filled with suspense and a relationships that I feel are more real than in many books。 The world building is also great and I can only hope the second book is just as good。

what can i say i have a penchant for authoritative figures that are cold and calculated but is actually very caring and protective aka im in loveeee with jase!!! honestly the romantic dialogs are not for me but the yearning is there。。。 is good。。。。 anyways this really IS a dance of thieves, there is so much stepping with the strategies and the lies, second guessing everyone。 BUT WHOOOOOOO IS THE DUDE FROM THE LAST CHAPTER HA

This was a very sweet romance。 I do think that during the middle, the plot was a bit directionless。 Kazi’s original mission was sort of forgotten for a large chunk。

wow。。。 this was one of the most boring fantasies that I have ever read。 The plot: kinda non-existent。 The romance: bland。 Main characters: even blander。 Jase is supposed to be a "nice" mafia leader (not my thing) and kazi was a knockoff walmart version of Inej from six of crows。 the action sequences were awesome but made up a small percentage of the book。 I had to push myself to actually finish this to give it a fair review but a small pick up at the end was too little too late。 wow。。。 this was one of the most boring fantasies that I have ever read。 The plot: kinda non-existent。 The romance: bland。 Main characters: even blander。 Jase is supposed to be a "nice" mafia leader (not my thing) and kazi was a knockoff walmart version of Inej from six of crows。 the action sequences were awesome but made up a small percentage of the book。 I had to push myself to actually finish this to give it a fair review but a small pick up at the end was too little too late。 。。。more

PSA -- this book was sold to me as a YA fantasy "enemies to lovers"。 This is a fade-to-black romance, Kazi is 17, and it's highly cheesy。 I'm not sure why some people on tiktok have marketed this as a "spicy" YA, because it is very much not。 I honestly never read the book description, and based on what I heard from tiktok I had assumed the main characters were like 19-23 in age, or real adults, before starting this。 IMO 2。5/5 stars, rounded down from 3。 Before I get into my ranting about this bo PSA -- this book was sold to me as a YA fantasy "enemies to lovers"。 This is a fade-to-black romance, Kazi is 17, and it's highly cheesy。 I'm not sure why some people on tiktok have marketed this as a "spicy" YA, because it is very much not。 I honestly never read the book description, and based on what I heard from tiktok I had assumed the main characters were like 19-23 in age, or real adults, before starting this。 IMO 2。5/5 stars, rounded down from 3。 Before I get into my ranting about this book -- I want to say that the ONLY reason this book is getting 2。5 stars is because of Kazi, Wren, and Synové。 The writing overall is not bad, but the pacing is very off throughout the book which is a major pet peeve of mine。*Spoilers Ahead*So first off--I hate Jase。 And the entire Ballenger family。 While I did not read the series that takes place adjacent to this, I really felt like the character development was basically non-existent。 IDEK how old Jase is supposed to be, but even his mother acts 15。 That family is actually embarrassingly incompetent。 I'm so sorry if you liked this book and the Ballengers, but they're god awful。Second, that ending was horse shit。 You're telling me Jase didn't even have his life truly threatened by the Queen? Kazi asks nicely and now Tor's Watch is the Ballenger's and that's it? They all go on their happy, merry way even though the Patrei was harboring war criminals? AND SLAVERS? I just don't fucking get it。 Third: What the fuck is the last chapter supposed to mean。 Am I supposed to understand something here? Was the dove brought back to life? Okay, I actually decided I don't care。 I don't think I'll be reading the third book at this point。 I may buy it and read it later when I'm bored in the future, but I'm so tired of YA fantasy lately。 The trope that someone finds their forever love in a fantasy novel at 17 is starting to get so old。 These hooligans barely know each other, are in lust bc it's like each other's first kiss, and decide they're in love FOREVER?My last point that I want to make related to the romance is--how the fuck does Kazi just move past and forgive the fact that Jase and his father have acted as incompetent rulers。 The fact is that they don't deserve a kingdom。 How does Kazi just move past the fact that Jase is an actual spoiled brat? Complaining that he had to pee in a bucket in a jail cell for like 2 pages of the book, FULLY KNOWING that Kazi's mother was taken by someone HE EMPLOYED and that she began fending for herself at six years old。 I'm so sick of Jase by the end of this book, I don't even understand how he's a worthy love interest for Kazi。 She's such a badass, and is literally able to drop Jase to his knees multiple times in this book because he's really that incompetent。 I only aim to read about powerful women who look for equals, not lesser。 Don't settle, ladies。Sorry if I sound too mean in this review。 If you can't tell, I don't like Jase at all。 。。。more

Anything with a badass female protagonist I will definitely read。 I can’t a begin to explain the anxious yet nauseous feeling I got when reading the plot。 I was so scared someone would get hurt, and that’s what I love。 That moment of dread deciding if I should continue or not。 Can’t wait to read Vow Of Thieves!!

Okay I seriously loved this book and ALL of its characters。 I feel in love with Jase and Kazi and their relationship constantly kept me on my toes。 The story itself is absolutely amazing and I loved every bit of it。 There really aren’t a lot of words to describe how much I loved this story。 I absolutely devoured it and I NEED MORE。 Good thing there’s a second book;)

DNF 40% I just can’t get into it haha which sucks cuz I’ve heard amazing things about the series plus I already have the second book ugh so so bummed。 I really thought I’d love this series but it just wasn’t for me。 I found the characters dull and wasn’t really rooting for anyone。 I hated how much expositional thoughts there were in Kazi’s chapters。 She’d ask Jace a question and then go proceed to say what he said in a long winded paragraph。 It would’ve flowed better, in my opinion, if there was DNF 40% I just can’t get into it haha which sucks cuz I’ve heard amazing things about the series plus I already have the second book ugh so so bummed。 I really thought I’d love this series but it just wasn’t for me。 I found the characters dull and wasn’t really rooting for anyone。 I hated how much expositional thoughts there were in Kazi’s chapters。 She’d ask Jace a question and then go proceed to say what he said in a long winded paragraph。 It would’ve flowed better, in my opinion, if there was more of a back and forth with these scenes。 I did skim ahead to other chapters and read some parts and it seemed to have some interesting moments!
